A property which looks out towards the French coast has become the first home in Alderney to be sold for more than £1m.
Situated in 1.5 acres of greenbelt on the eastern side of the island, Houmet Hourbe also overlooks the fort it was named after.
The property was sold this month for £1.55m.
Originally a granite cottage, it was extensively renovated and extended in the early 1990s by Sir Bernard Ashley, cofounder of the Laura Ashley brand.
The property now has three bedrooms, an entrance hall, reception room, kitchen, dining room, lounge, utility room, conservatory, kitchenette, sewing room, office, double bedroom with en-suite, master bedroom with en-suite, double bedroom, integral garage, double garage and extensive gardens.
Francis Simonet, proprietor of Alderney Estate Agency, sold the property.
Mr Simonet says the sale proves the island is still attractive ? even during a global economic recession.
Mr Simonet said: "We are delighted to have been instrumental in bringing buyer and seller together. This sale sets a new level for
Alderney property and we are particularly pleased that this sale has been completed in a difficult economic climate.
"Everyone is aware of the effect that the present recession has had on the property markets worldwide. However, it is encouraging to note that we have continued to sell island property at good prices since the onset of the credit crunch and we are, at this moment, processing other sales that are expected to be completed during the next two months."
Mr Simonet thinks the property market will remain active in the coming months.
He said: "It is our view that although sales will be harder to achieve during 2009, the market will remain active and that there will be good opportunities for both buyer and seller."
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.

Soon becoming an International Mountain Leader, he led trekking holidays in the UK, Europe and further afield for the next 20 years. This completed the Seven Continental Summits (the highest points of all seven continents), an achievement accomplished by a select group of about 400 people.
This talk is about the final, Everest, stage of The Seven Summits. The climb was from the north, through Tibet, the route originally visited by Mallory and Irvine in the 1920s. It will be a personal tale of the trip, illustrated with many photographs.
