Alderney Shipping bags vital contract

Alderney Shipping looks set to beat Huelin-Renouf to a vital contract.

The General Services Committee (GSC) has recommended Alderney Shipping retain the inter island shipping agreement, which gives a monopoly of the Alderney-Guernsey route.

The contract is due for renewal on January 1 and, after receiving tenders from Alderney Shipping and Huelin-Renouf, GSC members agreed Alderney Shipping was the preferred bidder.

Policy and Finance Committee members will debate the recommendation at their next meeting. Any decision will need to be ratified by the full States.

Alderney Shipping has served Alderney for more than 40 years, while Huelin-Renouf started a freight service to and from the island in February.

Check back later for reaction to the news.

Preffered bidder? Does that mean the lowest price? Give it to a preferred bidder that has had the contract for so long and you will never ever get anyone to bother to bid again.

Lets not kid ourselves. We don't create a massive amount of business for any route, sea or air.

The best we can hope for is either a benevolent operator who runs the route because he/she has an affinity with the Island, or have one which we all as taxpayers subsidize. Having lived elsewhere I know that most big companies would not be interested in the hassle factor of a relatively small travel/freight market such as ours.

On one hand we are worried about lack of competition on the air routes with the proposed Blue Islands takeover of Aurigny, and then with the other hand we give a monopoly to Alderney Shipping. The reasons for a shipping contract are long outdated and a free market economy should apply. We need competition on the sea route as much as we need it on the air route. Competition is to the benefit of Alderney in the long run.

Are monopolies even legal? Free trade is surely better for everybody. I think the States are making a big mistake by granting a contract.
