Healthcare report brands Island healthcare "parlous"

Posted Wed 1st February 2017 at 14:59

A full apology should be offered to Dr Rory Lyons and a raft of major improvements made to address the "parlous state" of healthcare on Alderney.

The independent Review of Health and Social Care, Need, Provision and Governance in Alderney was jointly commissioned by the States of Alderney and Guernsey in the wake of the damning investigation into the handling of the Dr Lyons' affair by the Health and Social Services Department.

Led by Professor Wilson, of the University of Aberdeen's Centre for Rural Health it was aimed at bringing Alderney residents' 'healthcare outcomes' in line with those in Guernsey, and made 19 recommendations.

But the report's worth has already been undermined by politicians in Guernsey.

Evidence was gathered by researchers over two months last summer. Some 423 people completed questionnaires and 116 people were interviewed face to face, including 80 health professionals and volunteers. The only 'hard' data available to reviewers was on prescriptions and death certificates.
