ALDERNEY is in at the birth of what has been described as the "single biggest project in aviation history."
Hopes of better 'short hop' air links have soared with the news that the Island, together with Guernsey and Jersey, has been chosen as the test-bed for revolutionary electrically-powered aircraft..
Funded by the UK Government, the project is being promoted by aviation expert Mark Harrisson, who lived in Alderney before moving to Guernsey.
At a briefing with States Members and Members of the Alderney Chamber of Commerce he revealed that the aircraft could be flying within the next three years, but because of its location, Alderney may have a fleet of high-tech electric Britten-Norman Islanders in service before then.
Mr Harrisson explained that the plans are for up to eight hybrid Britten-Norman twin-engine Islanders, with electric motors and a small generator at their rear for emergency batter charging, operating between the islands.
He told the States Members and business leaders that the nine-passenger Islanders will be far more economical than the present aircraft, offering the prospect of a much improved and cheaper inter-island service.
The multi-million pound projected is being supported by Rolls Royce/Siemens, Cranfield Aerospace, the Denis Feranti Group, Britten-Norman and Delta Motor Sports
Mr Harrisson said: "This is the single biggest project in all aviation history and offers and myriad of opportunities."
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
